The pieces move to the center when the buttons are pressed, forming a cage around slow mice.

I wasn't really happy with this one, not sure why I exported it. The maze moves to the left after the button is pressed.

348918 - temple 4 v2


Mice were still able to troll this so I removed the grounds on the ends. The temple phases through and is used as a boat to go back and forth between the cheese and hole.

When the button's pressed, the temple falls down and any mice in the way get trapped (or killed).

The invisible ground doesn't always spawn correctly, the same problem as in the Stair Lift map. I'm not sure why. I've used dynamic invalid rotation in other maps without problems, like Cat and March Minimalism. You're supposed to walk on the ground below until you go all the way to the right, and jump, then you'll stick to the top and have to walk all the way to the left, and jump, to get back down again.

The March contest winners were announced earlier this week. I got first place in the Night category and earned the forum title "Night Runner". :) Lots of people have been whispering me how much they hate/love the map. I also got third place in the Freestyle category. Overall, I'm happy. :)

I got fifth place in the Soundtrack category, which is a little disappointing. The scores were determined by taking the difference between yes and no votes, which is equivalent to counting those who didn't vote as half yes and half no. I'm not sure if this is the best way, since there's other explanations for why people didn't vote rather than ambivalence. For example, in Void's Jaws map, the ending is pretty quick, so maybe people didn't have time to vote. If instead the scores were determined by percent of yes votes, which assumes that those who didn't vote would vote in the same way as those who did, then the rankings would be different.

I've played the winners' maps in the other categories and they're pretty nice.


Baffler's been deperming a lot of maps lately. A lot of them are shaman maps, which I guess are too hard for the average mouse. Since maps don't die anymore, shaman maps don't need to be permanent, but I still think they're some of the best maps in the game, so I'm sad for that reason. Permanent maps are played just as often as other user maps, which is not that often, except in room perm (which only plays permanent maps), which isn't too popular at the moment. Maybe they're going to change things?

Cheezecream's winning map will be added to the official rotation permanently, like Knt's map is. I think there's something like 125 vanilla maps counting nightmode, and currently these are played 2/3 of the time with user maps the other 1/3. Maybe they'll change the cycle to vanilla-permanent-user, 1/3 each? It was like this for a while back in September or October, but there probably wasn't even 100 permanent maps back then, and now there's over 1000. Permanent maps are the supposed to be the best maps in the game, so why shouldn't they be played more often? I think it's at least worth trying.

For some reason the invalid rotation grounds caused problems for non-sync mice. The one on the left would start almost vertical, the one on the right at about a 45 degree angle. It spawned fine when I replaced those grounds with normal ones. I accidentally submitted it a second time instead of editing it.

I thought I would try a map where mice could control the elevators, now that I made a better mechanism. Mice can't really mess it up too much, but sync sure can. :(

I played the soundtrack maps in room contest. It was cool to see the variety, and I hope we'll get to look at maps from the other categories even though we won't vote on them.

I ended up liking my own map the best, but of course I have some bias. :) Of the rest I thought Tuiii's Pacman was pretty awesome. I also liked Gundoesk's Mario, Kirbychewy's Cake, Nyoibou's Puddi, and Voidmoon's Jaws. Honorable mention to Minitony's Tetris and Twobigo's Hot Air Balloon, both of which (I suspect) failed due to dynamic grounds dying again, which was fixed right before the contest room opened. Also Jeanmanolo's Poker Face, the only map I laughed at. :)

336287 - control of the heavens


I thought this was a cool idea. Mice follow the arrow to their death? to heaven? Then mice still on the ground push the block to the left so that the arrow lands on the cheese (and mice get cheese), and back to the right over the hole (and mice go in the hole).

335894 - elevator floors


This suffers the same problem as the previous map. The bottom two cheeses are fake.

335413 - elevators


This map works great in the editor, but in rooms mice push the block too fast and it breaks.

335405 - chocowalls 2


In this version mice can't push the walls, they're controlled by the blocks above.

335401 - chocowalls 1


I made this after the second one. Here mice can push the walls left-right.

335400 - miniature


Mice can move the large block by pushing the small block.

332899 - goat


Greatest (Transformice Map) of All Time. At least that's what I thought when making it. :) But it's actually kind of a boring map and I've since used the new mechanism in other maps. The shaman controls the mice suspended below by moving the anchored block left and right. Special thanks to Oaix for inspiration.

330792 - arrows


This was another idea I've had for a while. The arrow changes direction each time you get past the blocks. I finally got to play this in a room today (I had exported it on en2), and I don't think any of the mice noticed the arrow moving! I think they're too focused on getting to the cheese and when the ice blocks disappear they don't realize that other things have changed as well... maybe I should have made the arrows different colors?

330438 - stairs 1


I originally thought of having some sort of animal use this motion to keep trolling the shaman, but I decided that it was too much effort. I've used up all my animal art, I think. This one has dynamic grounds offscreen, so it doesn't work now that that bug was fixed yesterday. I've since made a better version.

328972 - double helix


A little boring but I've had this idea of using floating anchors since I first saw Rype's glitch. I couldn't figure out a good way of incorporating them into a map, so I eventually decided to just make an "art map" and be done with it.

327449 - march soundtrack


The fourth category is Soundtrack, where you're supposed to make a map that goes with a musical theme. I had wanted to do some sort of dancing figure since I first learned of Rype's glitch, but was never satisfied with the movement. Here I first thought of making a couple dancers bounce to "Jump" by Kris Kross. In that song they jump for two beats, then rest for two, then repeat. I was able to create this motion but I wasn't satisfied--I thought it was too boring to win the contest.

So I tried to think of other movement, of getting both the arms and feet to move, and of something that would be more challenging for the mice. And then I thought of this, a fighter who would punch and kick the mice. The stance is kind of similar to the "Crane" from the Karate Kid, and "You're the Best Around" was my second choice for music. But I thought "Kung Fu Fighting" would be more universal, and more fun.

327448 - march freestyle


The third category is Freestyle, where they give you the start of the xml. In this case it was the two mice spawns, the two ice blocks in the center, and the cheese (located between the ice blocks). The phrasing of the contest again seems to stress originality, and I don't think anyone's made a puzzle map like this (or any in my puzzle series). This one is basically the same as Puzzle 2, except there's two moving blocks and three fixed blocks, instead of three and two.

327447 - march night


The second category is Night, where you're expected to make "a good, functional night map". Is such a map possible? I don't think I've ever played one. Anyway, this is my second nightmode map (Curtain Call was the first). It's fairly challenging when you factor in lag.

327444 - march minimalism


The first category is Minimalism, where you're supposed to "create an innovative map with only 8 grounds." At first glance this looks just about as minimal as you can get:  only one ground. But there's some other stuff happening... :)

I guess I lied when I said last time that "I'm probably done making new maps for now." I made some maps for the March contest. I didn't enter previous contests because I wasn't making maps at the time or was only making shaman maps. But lately I've been making regular maps so I'm getting lots of ideas.

The contest this month seems to reward originality, so I think I have a decent chance in each of the four categories. I'm happy with all the maps, anyway. Voting begins in a couple days so I won't release pictures/code until then. And because I want to post my maps in order I won't show any of the other new ones until then, either.

There was an update last Sunday that changed a few things. Planks were broken for a few days, we basically couldn't play in the shaman room. That's been fixed but the other changes are still here. The first is that every mouse seems to be sync. It's harder to fall out of cages (like on Map 42 Roller Coaster) and blocks can be in different places to different mice (like on Map 77 Draggable Ice). I guess this is nice in some ways, but it ruins a lot of my maps. Basically, one mouse sees a button being pressed but the other doesn't, so the trap or whatever springs for some people but not others. My freestyle map for the contest is a puzzle and the couple of times I played it with other mice it was chaos. I'm sure my other puzzles are like that too, now.

The other change is that dynamic blocks don't die anymore. They used to vanish at the same points where shaman objects did, but now they keep going. Ctg found that they do stop, but only when their edge (not center) is at Y=3000 or similar. And beyond some point grounds don't stop large dynamic blocks from moving... It's all very strange. Anyway, this ruins a lot of my maps too.
